What should we have in mind when choosing a milk pitcher?

Practical tips for buying our first milk picher!

Milk espresso drinks, such as Cappuccino, Flat White or Latte, owe much to their success, in addition to good coffee, successful milk foam. Proper milk foam, in texture, volume and temperature, is a difficult and demanding process, which often becomes the nightmare of every barista, but also his reward, when done correctly. To start our experiments with frothed milk, the first step is to choose the right milk pitcher.

As with any barista accessory, choosing the right milk pitcher is a puzzle that concerns not only amateurs, but even the most experienced barist. In general, when choosing equipment, we must be guided by our real needs, our personal tastes and not be carried away by luxury, expensive or specialized options.

The following tips are intended to help those who are thinking of buying their first milk jug, but also (why not?) Those who have a problem with their milk jug and are thinking of changing it.

What should we have in mind when choosing a milk pitcher?

Size

The size of the milk jug we choose depends on our needs and the use for which we intend it. How much milk we need each time we make coffee will guide us to the size of a milk jug that will serve us better. Most commercially available milk coolers start at 350ml and go up to a liter, with intermediate sizes of 590ml, 600ml, etc. Of course, a professional barista, who will have to prepare 6-7 coffees immediately, has very different needs from one amateur who prepares 1-2 coffees at a time.

An important tip that we should always keep in mind is the fact that the capacity of the milk jug is always calculated at full capacity, but usually the milk pans are filled with milk up to about the middle, so that it is easier and more efficient to create lactose. This actually greatly reduces the listed capacity and should always be taken into account when calculating our needs.

Shape and ergonomics

The shape of the milk jug is always slightly conical, but the basic "secrets" for its ergonomics are hidden in two features: the handle and the spout.

The mouth of the milk jug makes making coffee significantly easier, while it is very difficult to create a Latte Art from a mouthless milk jug. The choice of the appropriate mouthpiece depends on the experience of each barista, as well as the use for which it is intended. Although very experienced baristi can easily use almost any milk jug, for the less experienced or even home baristi, it is suitable for a nozzle with a nozzle that makes their life easier, instead of making it difficult.

Although there are several baristas who claim that handleless milkshakes offer greater flexibility, most generally have a handle that is designed to deliver maximum ergonomics. Ultimately, the issue of the handle lies in how everyone is used to working, in their training and, of course, in how they are going to handle their foam milk.

Construction material and surface

Almost all reliable milk coolers are made of stainless steel, which helps to better absorb heat from the steam nozzle, is easy to clean and does not oxidize and helps the milk to bind the steam.

In relation to the surface of the milk jug, the choice is a matter of personal taste and aesthetics of each barista. Commercial milking parlors are available in matte and glossy finishes, in a variety of colors, and there are also those that are lined with thermal insulation materials, such as plastic or Teflon, for better and easier grip than the barista.

Proper lactation, especially for an amateur barista, is not an easy task, as it requires experience, technique, good raw materials and equipment. Choosing the right milk jug is an important and decisive first step!
