Affogato : an easy to prepare italian dessert - like coffee !

by coffees.gr

Widely known for its simplicity, Italian cuisine has also influenced Italy’s coffee culture. The Italians do not like complex additions that overshadow the true taste of coffee, while the majority of the espresso varieties carrying fanciful names such as "corretto" or "ristretto" tend to keep the enjoyment of coffee in the essentials, following the primary philosophy of Italian cuisine. So does another Italian dessert like coffee, "affogato" (the drowned).

Affogato : the italian dessert-like coffe

To prepare an afffogato, an ice cream ball is “drowned” in strong espresso. Although it is served throughout Italy, our neighbors are divided whether it should be call a dessert rather than coffee : usually, it’s served as a dessert at restaurants, while coffee shops and bars tend to serve it as drink. Affogato is ideal for closing an Italian dinner, combining the digestive properties of espresso with the dew and sweetness of ice cream, but it can be just as enjoyable during a hot summer afternoon

For a cup of affogato, we need :

 - A double espresso
 - A scoop of ice cream

 - A wide glass, already chilled in

the freezer

How to prepare an affogato :

 - Put the ice cream scoop in the glass. Keep it chilled

 - Prepare the double espresso

- Pour carefully the espresso over the ice cream

Tips for the best homemade affogato :

  • Affogato’s recipe is quite simple, so it requires quality ingredients to go full taste. Use good, delicious ice cream and a quality espresso to prepare your affogato.
  • It’s recommended to use mild flavor ice cream, in order to not overshadow coffee’s taste – affogato is about balance. Traditionally, plain vanilla ice cream is used, however we can use other flavors as well, as long as we are sure they are not very intense.
  • It’s important that our glass is chilled before we start the preparation, as it will help ice cream keep its temperature. The goal is that ice cream will melt gently and slowly from the hot coffee, in order to achieve the desired texture
  • As ice cream is creamy and sweet, our espresso must be strong enough to have the desired intensity and contrast. We prefer a blend of dark roasted coffee in order to achieve the desired effect.
  • The texture of our drink plays an important role in its success. It’s required to have a rich cream espresso, as it is decisive for the enjoyment of the affogato.
  • The traditional affogato contains only ice cream and espresso. However, we can experiment with some other ingredients in order to give our coffee a different twist : a few drops of coffee liqueur or amaretto will intensify the flavor, while few roasted nuts will offer crispness, making the texture contrast extremely interesting.
