A Master Chef inspired coffee that will impress your friends.

It's unlikely that we've ever stumbled upon one of the many shops that serve the so-called "Bubble Tea" or "Bobba Tea", the impressive tea drink that consists of small, shiny tea and ice pearls. Is it time to try a ba Boba Coffee?

As we understand it, Boba Coffee is a coffee with a particularly impressive appearance, consisting of iced coffee and coffee pearls, called Boba Pearls. Although the preparation of the pearls essentially follows the principles of molecular gastronomy, one does not need to be a… Master Chef to prepare the impressive Boba Coffee at home, since only three ingredients are required and no specialized equipment at all.

The only difficulty lies in the tapioca flour. Tapioca flour is a ground root of the cassava plant, which thrives in Latin America and Southeast Asia and is a key ingredient in many South American and Asian dishes. However, it can be found relatively easily in ethnic grocery stores, and the skill in making pearls will be gained with just a few tests.

Boba Coffee will really steal the show in a friendly gathering, while we can be very flexible when it comes to our drink, as we can make Boba Coffee by keeping the pearls brown, with a plethora of different ingredients and combinations.

What do you need for the coffee pearls?

  • 3 tablespoons hot coffee
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar or coconut sugar
  • 1/2 cup tapioca flour (in ethnic grocery stores)

How are the coffee pearls prepared?

  • In a non-stick pan, heat the coffee and sugar until the syrup starts to boil.
  • Pour half the tapioca flour, and stir with a wooden spoon until it starts to "come off" from the walls.
  • Remove from the heat, add the rest of the flour, stir and transfer to a wooden cutting board.
  • Knead for five minutes, until the mixture is like clay.
  • Shape the mixture into small pearls
  • Heat water on low heat, and boil our pearls for 10-15 minutes, until they come to the surface.
  • Once strained, place them in cold water for a few minutes.

How are the coffee pearls served?

  • It is very important to choose a transparent, glass glass, so that the pearls of the coffee look, as the most impressive thing about Boba Coffee is its serving.
  • It is very common for pearls to be served with milk, as the contrast makes brown pearls more visible.
  • You can use Cold Brew, for a more delicate aroma and sweet taste, or iced espresso, for a more creamy and enjoyable texture.
  • If you want to emphasize the exotic character of the drink, we can add coconut milk instead of milk.
  • Grated ice helps our drink get an enjoyable texture.
  • The pearls are usually shiny and resemble chewing gum in texture. Of course, homemade pearls may not be as successful as those found in restaurants, as most of the chemicals used in molecular gastronomy are used.
  • The pearls are kept in the refrigerator, in a sealed container, for up to 10 days.

If we have guests for afternoon coffee and we want to impress them with a really unusual drink, a tall glass with Boba Coffee is probably the best choice!
