Η ποικιλία στους παγωμένους, δροσιστικούς καφέδες είναι τόσο μεγάλη, που αυτό το καλοκαίρι δε θα ξέρουμε τι να πρωτοδιαλέξουμε!

In the minds of most of us, Latin America is interwoven with coffee, since the most important part of our world coffee production comes from South and Central America. However, there are also South American countries that do not produce coffee - one of them is Chile.

Chile's soils extend further south of the boundaries of the so called "coffee belt," so its climate is not suited to the cultivation of coffee trees. It is characteristic that Chile is the only country of Latin America in which tea proves to be more popular than coffee! However, Chileans have developed their own coffee culture, and many coffee processing and standardization companies are also operating in the country, which use beans imported from neighboring countries.

One of the most characteristic coffees of the Chilean coffee culture is Café Helado. In Spanish, Café Helado simply means "frozen coffee" and its peculiarity lies in the use of ice cream. Café Helado can be prepared either with instant coffee or espresso, as until recently the instant coffee was quite popular in South American countries and espresso began to gain ground just recently. In a successful Café Helado, the texture is of particular importance: unlike other coffees that use ice cream, no blender is used, so the drink does not have the milkshake texture, while unlike the affogato, Italian espresso with ice cream that is particularly simple and simple , Café Helado is particularly exuberant, since it has milk, sugar and whipped cream.

The version that uses instant coffee may remind some older people of the "ice cream frappe", a specialty that used to be used in Greek cafes in the 1980s and 90s. However, by preparing the recipe with a good, strong espresso, we have a very delicious coffee that is enriched and stays cool from melting ice cream.

What do you need for a Café Helado;

  • 1 espresso or alternatively ½ tablespoon instant coffee
  • Cold milk
  • 1 ball of vanilla ice cream
  • Sugar at will
  • Whipped cream, for serving
  • A wide straw

How is Café Helado prepared?

  • Prepare the espresso or dissolve the instant coffee in some warm water
  • In a tall glass, add the coffee, milk, sugar and stir
  • Add the ice cream and stir.
  • Serve with whipped cream, cocoa and milkshake straw and, if necessary, add ice

Tips for a delicious Café Helado

  • You can use whatever ice cream we want, such as chocolate ice cream, although traditionally prepared with vanilla ice cream
  • Although Chileans usually add large amounts of sugar, it is prudent to avoid excesses, as ice cream and milk make it easier to taste coffee. More sugar means less intense coffee flavor and more calories
  • If you choose to prepare the espresso variation, it is better to use a Robusta-rich blend to get the taste of coffee in our glass. A coffee blend suitable for freddo espresso is a good and safe choice.
  • However, Arabica lovers can use any blend of love, especially an aromatic Latin American blend.
  • If on the other hand we chose instant coffee, Nescafe's taste is a guarantee of quality.
  • The secret is in the texture: coffee should not be reminiscent of milkshake, since it is not hit in a blender. Ice cream must melt slowly into the coffee, enriching its flavor.

This summer, if you have the appetite cor coffee & ice cream, you know what you can do: in a few minutes you can prepare a frozen and delicious Café Helado and move right to Chile! Salud!
