Cameroon: a rising player in the Robusta market

Strong, enjoyable Robusta from a country with a 140-year tradition in coffee.

Cameroon is a country in West Africa, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and strategically located at a commercial crossroads of the Black Continent. The first European conquerors were the Portuguese, who gave the country its name, which means "Shrimp River". The country's colonial adventures will divide it between Germany, France and Great Britain until its independence in the 1970s.

The "miniature of Africa" as Cameroon is known, due to its linguistic, geological and cultural diversity, is mainly an agricultural-livestock economy, with almost 70% of Cameroonians working in one of the two sectors. The crown of this production of course is cocoa, and coffee!

A Brief History of Coffee in Cameroon

Coffee cultivation in Cameroon began in the late 19th century, along with the spread of coffee throughout the continent, at a time when the country was still a German colony. The German colonialists created the first "gardens" with coffee trees in certain parts of the country, but the cultivation quickly spread to even more places, and by the interwar period Cameroon had become a strong "player" in coffee exports. Production peaked in the 1990s, only to decline a little later due to a number of factors, but a panel of Brazilian experts managed to put it back on track.

Today, coffee growing is a key pillar of Cameroon's economy, as is the case in many African countries, which rely on growing and exporting products such as cocoa and coffee to grow their economies. Cameroon is one of the 20 largest coffee producing countries in the world and one of the five largest on the African continent.

What does Cameroon coffee taste like?

Coffee is grown almost all over the country, with the hardy Robusta starring in coastal areas and Arabica being limited to mountainous areas, mainly in the West of the African country. The Cameroonian Arabica has its roots mainly in Jamaica and Indonesia's Java, with the latter constantly gaining ground due to its resistance to coffee fungi, which are a major problem for African coffee growers. In general, Cameroon is best known for its Robusta, which, although in the past channeled into instant coffee production, has in recent years yielded remarkable, high-quality crops that are not reminiscent of a "sinful" past.

Today, Cameroonian Robusta is characterized by a rich body, strong aftertaste and aromas that differ from the average Robusta found on the market. Its delicious palette is reminiscent of chocolate, nuts such as hazelnut and sometimes caramel, and is widely used in Italian espresso blends that require intensity and thick cream, while the adventurous do not hesitate to enjoy it as a single variety, thanks to its excellent character.

A delicious proposal for a delicious espresso with aroma from Cameroon

Even those who are suspicious of Robusta will be surprised with this coffee, since in the cup it displays strong but at the same time delicate and aromatic espresso, with strong notes of bitter chocolate and hazelnuts. The rich buttery aftertaste will drive you crazy, while its thick cream is particularly enjoyable, as well as its strong body.
