Coffee Colada, for wonderful summer evenings

26/05/2021
by coffees.gr

The Puerto Rico's national drink meets the strong coffee.

Pina Colada means "Drained Pineapple" in Spanish, and is the name of one of the most popular summer cocktails in the world. Hailing from Puerto Rico, urban legend has it that his father was not an imaginative bartender, but a local pirate named Roberto Cofresi, who served his crew a drink of rum, pineapple and coconut. In more recent years, the Caribbean Hilton is claiming paternity for the legendary drink, and Puerto Rico itself declared it its official drink in 1978.

Traditionally, Pina Colada also used bitters, which gave a bitter dimension that pleasantly contrasted the sweetness of the pineapple and coconut. Maybe that's what some bartenders thought and decided to launch a drink that while at first seems a bad idea, in the end has a fascinating taste: Coffee Colada! It does not differ in anything from the Pina Colada we know, with the difference that it contains strong coffee, usually instantaneous, something that gives it intensity, bitterness and creamy texture. Let's try it!

What do we need for a Coffee Colada?

- 60 ml Rum
- 240 ml Coconut Milk
- 2 tablespoons instant coffee
- 4 tablespoons pineapple juice

How is Coffee Colada prepared?

- Place all the ingredients in a blender
- Beat until the mixture is homogeneous
- Serve in Pina Colada glasses, with small umbrellas and straws and ice

Tips for a refreshing Coffee Colada

- Use white rum and not aged, because we want our cocktail to be light and summery
- Do not use sugar, as pineapple juice is quite sweet on its own
- You can slightly increase the coffee, putting up to half a spoon more
- Serve with pieces of pineapple or grated coconut on the lips of the glass (as we would do with the salt in the daisy)
- Many bartenders add a cup of coffee liqueur, which emphasizes the taste of coffee, but also gives a more creamy texture.
- It is drunk as a long drink, so it is good to have enough ice.

For summer afternoons on the balcony or in the garden, the "coffee or drink" dilemma is a thing of the past with an iced Coffee Colada!
