Marrying aperitif with coffee, with an Espresso Spritz!

by coffees.gr

Two favorite Italian habits in a delicious drink!

The "hybrid" drinks, ie the cocktails that are created with diverse ingredients, often marrying different traditions, seem to be constantly gaining ground, in the bars of the whole planet. From the caffeinated versions of classic cocktails to the imaginative creations of the new baristi, more and more bars have drinks that combine alcohol with coffee. One of the most successful, but also simple recipes of its kind, is Espresso Spritz.

Espresso Spritz marries two favorite Italian habits: espresso and afternoon aperitif. Three favorite, bitter flavors are combined in a drink that is ideal for summer afternoons, but also as a starting drink for an Italian dinner. Due to the digestive properties of espresso and Tonic, Espresso Spritz can also be served at dinner, especially if the food consumed was greasy and heavy.

Anyone who is not accustomed to the character of Italian aperitifs may be surprised by the first sip of Espresso Spritz, but the palates trained in the bitter nature of these drinks will probably discover the recipe that will keep them company in the summer afternoons!

What do you need for an Espresso Spritz?

  • 2 espresso
  • 50 ml Tonic
  • 50 ml Campari
  • 1 piece of rosemary
  • 1 slice of orange

How is Espresso Spritz prepared?

  • Prepare the two single espresso
  • Beat them with ice to cool.
  • In a glass with ice, place the orange slice and rosemary
  • Add the Campari and Tonic
  • Fill with coffee
  • Serve!

Tips for refreshing Espresso Spritz

  • Espresso Spritz marries the tonic nature of espresso with the Italian tradition of aperitif, so the best time to enjoy it is early in the evening or late in the afternoon.
  • Use a blend with dark browning, the delicious profile of which matches Campari and Tonic. A Neapolitan espresso, like the Passalacqua Cremador or a strong blend like the Segafredo Extra Strong are ideal for this cocktail.
  • Espresso Spritz is a drink for special tastes, as it combines three bitter flavors, Campari, espresso and Tonic. Adding sugar is not recommended, but if you want to reduce the bitterness, you can replace the Tonic with an equal amount of soda, for a lighter result.
  • When served, your drink will create "layers", as the bubbles from the tonic or soda will push the espresso to the top of the glass.
  • Enjoy responsibly and avoid driving, as with any alcoholic beverage.
  • Instead of Campari, you can use a corresponding Italian aperitif, provided that the taste maintains its bitter character, which is necessary for the taste of our cocktail.
  • Rosemary gives an interesting Mediterranean flavor, but if we don't like it, we can skip it without any problems.

This summer, combine two favorite habits, aperitif and espresso, and go for a walk to Italy without moving from your terrace.
