Tea for many people is a pleasant alternative to coffee - although most people tend to combine the two beverages. Those who love tea will enjoy even more if they learn the beneficial benefits to the human body.

Tea, both as a plant and as a beverage, comes from China and its properties have been known since its beginnings, as the first relevant reference is found in a Chinese pharmaceutical manual of the 3rd century BC. Although in Europe it has been introduced since the 17th century, it was only recently the West discovered again the beneficial properties of tea - until we reach today, the benefits of drinking tea in human health are widely known.

How does tea benefits our health?

Relevant studies indicate that tea significantly reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke, as well as regulating blood pressure and lowering blood cholesterol levels. With cardiovascular disease being one of the Western world life threats (especially in the male population), tea is almost essential in a balanced diet.

Equally beneficial are the benefits of tea to the health of the gastrointestinal tract. Tea drink has natural digestive properties, helps in metabolism and has been seen to be particularly useful in treating stomach inflammation, but also in the case of chronic intestinal or stomach cramps.

Of course, the benefits of tea to mental health should not be overlooked. Tea and related drinks help fight insomnia, improve cognitive functions, such as memory, and treat stress.

In addition, several other, less well known tea properties, which have been studied by scientists, are increasingly being encouraged, such as the contribution of tea to the prevention or treatment of diseases such as Parkinson's disease, diabetes mellitus, common cold or even various forms of cancer.

What are the beneficial ingredients that tea contains?

The benefits of tea for human health are due to the chemicals contained in the leaves of the plant, which are extracted into our mug. Tea is particularly rich in polyphenols, catechins and epitheecheins, substances belonging to the large family of antioxidants. Antioxidants are contained in all types of tea circulating while they are found in a slightly higher concentration in green tea.

Antioxidant elements are essential for a balanced diet and are contained in both tea and coffee. It is worth noting that while all types of tea are beneficial to health, both green and white or black tea have different properties suitable for different health problems.

Is there anything one should have in mind regarding tea consumption?

Though moderate tea consumption is extremely beneficial for health, we should not forget that tea (and especially black tea) contains caffeine, which should be taken in reasonable doses per day, and in any case with the doctor's agreement during breastfeeding or pregnancy. Still, it is important to know that while tea can act supportive to a range of health problems, it is by no means a substitute for a visit to a doctor or the appropriate treatment every time. The important thing is to include tea (but also coffee) in a balanced diet so that our body can benefit altogether. Of course, it  adding sugar or sweeteners to tea should be avoidedas they increase its calories.
