The twisted version of an iconic cocktail: Old Fashioned Espresso

04/12/2019
by coffees.gr

Whiskey and coffee have never been more successfully combined.

Alcohol fits well with coffee, whether we are talking about coffees with a small dose of drink, or about cocktails that include coffee. Old Fashioned espresso is the well-known and beloved Old Fashioned, with a small twist of caffeine: with the addition of a double espresso, the flavors are pleasingly contrasting, and the drink is perfect for the evening's start.

Old Fashioned is one of the oldest and most famous cocktails in the world and originates in the United States. Its original version includes sugar, whiskey, bitters and in some cases citrus fruits, such as orange or lemon. Old Fashioned was created in the late 19th century and has become so popular that it has also baptized the glass, Old Fashioned Glass.

When, in the years that followed, more sophisticated ingredients, such as liqueurs or absinthe, began to be added to cocktails, fans of the simpler cocktails used to ask their bar-drinkers to be old fashioned, giving the name to this timeless cocktail.

Old Fashioned Espresso takes root in the tradition of cocktails and brings a little air of refreshment by somehow marrying the American tradition of cocktails with Italian espresso refinement - with explosive tasting results!

What do you need for an Old Fashioned Espresso ;

  • A double espresso (60 ml) in room temperature
  • 30 ml whiskey or bourbon
  • 8 ml simple sugar syrup
  • Α dash of angostura bitters
  • Α lemon peel

How is Old Fashioned Espresso prepared?

  • In a cocktail shaker, pour all the ingredients (except the lemon peel) and fill with ice
  • Shake for about 30 seconds
  • Strain into a glass of Old Fashioned, fill with ice
  • Grate the lemon peel on the lips of the glass and then dicard it.

Tips for the best Old Fashioned Espressos

  • Use 100% Arabica blends for your espresso, as its delicate and sophisticated taste will further enhance the taste of our cocktail.
  • The original version includes American bourbon whiskey, but you can prepare it whichever we prefer.
  • Of course, do not forget that your drink contains alcohol, so consume responsibly and do not drive after drinking alcohol.
  • Instead of lemon, you can use orange, which also fits well with coffee and whiskey.
  • Angostura bitters are one of the oldest and most historic cocktail bitters, however you can experiment with different Cocktail Bitters for different tasting results.
  • You can use sugar instead of simple syrup - many even argue that the original old fashioned recipe used sugar cubes instead of syrup.

If you love whiskey as well as coffee, you may have found the drink that will start your evening here. With an Old Fashioned Espresso, the nights are exciting!
