Panettone Latte, the magic of Christmas in a cup

22/12/2023
by coffees.gr

Italy's most popular Christmas sweet in an espresso version.

Panettone is one of the most traditional Italian Christmas and New Year sweets. The custom originated in northern Italy, having its roots in Roman times, then spread throughout the country and today are found around the world, especially in Europe and Latin America, as one of the most famous delicatessen delights of the festive season.

Panettone simply means "big cake", it is particularly difficult to prepare, since the dough rests and matures for days, in order to achieve its fluffy texture. Traditionally, it is flavored with candied fruits (orange, citrus peels, raisins) and is accompanied by sweet wine or Italian liqueur. Of course, today there are various versions, such as chocolate or chestnut, while coffee (and especially Italian espresso) has proven to be an ideal accompaniment to a Panettone slice!

Can we transfer the Panettone experience to a cup of coffee? The real coffee lover seems to be in trouble! First, we need a fluffy, velvety coffee, so a latte with a little whipped cream is a must. Most importantly, we must imitate the aromas that characterize Panettone. Panettone Latte is an experiment that can bring the sweetness of an Italian oven to our espresso cup and fill us with Christmas scents with just one sip!

What do you need for Panettone Latte?

A double espresso
250 ml milk
Orange syrup
Cinnamon
Chopped candied fruits and almonds
30 ml sweet Italian wine
Whipped cream

How is Panettone Latte prepared?

We prepare the double espresso
Mix the coffee well with the syrup, the wine and the cinnamon
Heat the milk
Mix half the milk with the coffee, beat the other half in frothed milk and incorporate it in the coffee
Serve with whipped cream and the fruit and almonds very finely chopped

Tips for delicious Panettone Latte

We choose an aromatic, sweet drink 100% Arabica blend, without intense acidity, which will be the "canvas" to tie all the flavors together.
Serve with a piece of panettone or in the most Greek, with melomakarona and kourabiedes.
Instead of orange syrup, we can use a few drops of orange essential oil, which will make our drink more aromatic and less sweet.
Instead of Italian wine, we can use a little rum or shampoo, but the result will be far from the taste we want to achieve.
It is important to have frothed milk and whipped cream to mimic the airy, velvety feel of the original Panettone.

Can some spices and a little wine transform an espresso into your favorite Italian cake? With a little Christmas magic, of course they can!
