Salty Iced Coffee, a new trend in iced coffees

14/03/2019
by coffees.gr

Coffee is particularly influenced by gastronomic developments and often affects it in turn. From the United States comes a coffee that combines the bittersweet coffee with the salty salt!

Undoubtedly, the tastes that bind to the sweet with salty are a global gastronomic trend in recent years. Bitter chocolates with thick salt (but also with spices typical of salty foods) appear more and more often, while salty caramel is one of the most widespread trends in the world, as it accompanies both desserts and imaginative dishes.

Our tasting sensory has been cultivated in particular, recognizing - and appreciating - flavorful combinations that until a few years ago might have seemed unusual. Whether the delicious combination of sweetness and salty taste will dominate the gastronomic world, or whether it is another trend that will degenerate after a while, will prove over the years, but the only certainty is that for the next few years will continue to employ those who have gastronomic concerns.

Coffee, of course, has not been left untouched by this new trend - it is, moreover, a beverage that is particularly influenced by the trends and gestures of gastronomy. So, it was a matter of time, after salty candies and salted chocolates, that experiments were made to mix the coffee with salt. Efforts have started (of course) from the United States of America, which has been feeding the world of coffee in recent years with interesting recipes. In fact, adding salt to coffee is, as it seems, unbelievable, an old case: there are few who claim that the (minimal) addition of salt balances the natural bitterness of coffee, resulting in a slightly sweet taste.

In his American, hipster version, salted coffee is exclusively iced cold, sweet due to the addition of sugar and salt comes in conjunction with whipped cream. The whole effect reminiscent of the salty butter toffee, as the aromas of coffee blend in with the familiar flavor of salt and the sweetness of sugar unifies the tasty pallet. Maybe, it will never become your favourite coffee beverage - but it is definitely worth a try!

What do you need for a  salted coffee?

  • 240 ml whipped cream
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 950 ml strong, cold coffee
  • 75 – 100 gr sugar

How is Salted Coffee prepared?

  • Whip the cream until it swells slightly without too much tightening
  • Add the salt, stir and leave aside
  • Add the sugar to the cold coffee and stir until it dissolves completely
  • Serve the coffee in low freddo glasses and top with a large spoonful of salty cream.

Tips for the tastiest salted coffee

  • You can use whatever iced coffee you like, such as Freddo Espresso, Cold Brew or even filter coffee that has gone cold, and experiment with the result.
  • A lot of sugar, cream and salt tend to sneak the natural characteristics of the coffee. There is no reason to use 100% Arabica delicate blends for this coffee; instead, a Robusta-rich blend will provide the necessary body, such as Garibaldi Espresso Bar or Amigos Qualita Rossa.
  • It is good to use fine sea salt, in coarse grains, like what we would use in pastry. Common salt trade does not offer a special flavor and will destroy any flavor.
  • The recipe contains a lot of sugar, but it goes without saying that we can adapt it to your taste, after some experiments.
  • Beware of calories, which increase vertically due to both sugar and whipped cream.
  • You can serve the coffee by grindin butter toffee over the whipped cream, for a larger flavor twist.

Coffee evolves and new recipes are constantly making their appearance, others pressing on the taste tradition and others suggesting original flavor combinations. If you are in the mood for experimentation, try the salted coffee - even if it does not fully conquer you, you have opened your taste buds.
