The largest German Espresso Brand comes to Coffees.gr

While Italy is certainly the homeland and queen of espresso, there are many espresso brands based in other countries that manage to make a difference. Tchibo from Germany, active and a leading player in the coffee industry since 1949, is a prime example of how good espresso doesn't stop at Italian borders.

A Brief History of Tchibo

The history of Caffe Tchibo begins in 1949, when the self-made and self-taught entrepreneur Max Herz, together with his partner, Carl Tchiling, started a business by sending roasted coffee to their customers’ homes by mail for the first time – a new idea was born! A few years later, this kind of innovative communication with customers was complemented by Tchibo Magazine, a magazine with a variety of subjects that was extremely popular. Tchibo opened stores all over Germany, testing increasingly innovative marketing and advertising methods, such as Mr Tchibo, the “coffee expert” who starred in its campaigns and saw its blends become favorites of the German public. By the 1960s, it now had over 400 stores across the country and the company passed into the hands of Max’s sons, Gunter and Michael.

The passing years find the company constantly progressing, investing in various forms of retail and constantly reinventing itself. With the dawn of the 1990s, expansion begins, initially in Eastern Europe, then in the rest of Epirus, while expanding its turnover.

Today, the company has over 900 stores throughout Europe, more than 20,000 points of sale, employs over 10,000 employees worldwide and is the market leader not only in Germany, but also in Eastern Europe, always remaining a family business. Its secret? Not only has it managed to always be one step ahead of its time, leading the way, but it has also never changed the high quality of the blends for which it has become known.

“Less Words, More Action”

With this simple but comprehensive motto, Tchibo aspires to confront the challenges that plague the coffee industry in the 21st century, such as human rights and fair wages, environmental protection and tackling climate change, but also shrinking water reserves. Being a family business, Tchibo’s sensitivity to these critical issues is a given and the goal is to create sustainable alternatives at every step of coffee production.

In this context, over 98% of the packaging materials used for Tchibo’s blends are made from recyclable materials, while the energy it uses has managed to be 100% “clean”. At the same time, over 40,000 farmers around the world have benefited from the company's various projects, which aim to consolidate Fair Trade in various ways.
