Unique coffee from the area of the Great Lakes.

Uganda is located in East Africa, in the Great Lakes region of Africa, and borders Kenya, Tanzania, Sudan, Congo and Rwanda, while on its territory is the largest part of Lake Victoria. Being a British colony since the late 19th century, Uganda gained its independence in 1962, followed by a period of coups, civil strife and political unrest, and in recent years the situation has normalized significantly.

Due to its geographical location it is a very fertile country, with rich natural environment and special beauties, which remains mainly a rural economy, relatively unaffected by tourism. The country's main export product is coffee - and in fact, the powerful Robusta. Let's get to know him better!

A brief history of coffee in Uganda

Although Robusta is endemic to Uganda, growing in the Kabbalah area near Lake Victoria, coffee cultivation has taken a long time to systematize and organize in the African country. Until the late 1970s, the country's main export was cocoa, with some farmers also growing coffee, which was usually smuggled into neighboring countries. With the decline of cocoa plantations, the central design of the country, whose economy is predominantly rural, turned to coffee.

Despite the political unrest and instability that plagued the country, coffee cultivation has been on the rise since the 1990s. Arabica varieties from Ethiopia were introduced to the country, the older organizations that oversaw the cultivation and trade of coffee were reorganized, farmers were encouraged, and smuggling was cracked down on. At the same time, the cultivation of the local, endemic Robusta was significantly enhanced, with techniques that came from South America, such as cultivation in the shade, with the aim of creating a unique and quality product. The efforts paid off and Robusta from Uganda is recognized as one of the best in the world.

Today, Uganda is among the ten largest coffee producing countries in the world, with Robusta still holding the lion's share. Coffee is now the most valuable export product of the country, having long since displaced cocoa, while along with the quantity, the quality of Ugandan coffee is constantly improving.

What does Uganda coffee taste like?

Although Uganda has a small but not negligible production of Arabica, with a taste profile reminiscent of the special Arabica of other African countries, such as Kenya or Tanzania, with its fruity character, spicy aftertaste and lively acidity, its strong paper country is, as strange as it sounds at first, Robusta!

Coffee makers in Uganda have decided to take advantage of local coffee, focusing on improving cultivation and processing conditions, producing a remarkable coffee that breaks down coffee stereotypes about Robusta. Thus, Ugandan coffee has a rich aromatic and taste profile, dominated by earthy notes (wood, smoke) but also aromas of bitter chocolate and nuts. Its rich cream makes it an ideal ingredient for espresso blends, which also give it intensity, strong body and adventurous character.

In recent years, efforts have been made to give coffee from areas near Lake Victoria a more delicatessen status, with the launch of extremely interesting single-variety coffees from the area, in a project that also focuses on environmental protection and sustainable development.

Maybe the future of coffee lies in a cup of strong espresso with beans from the Great Lakes of Africa - in an intense and aromatic espresso from Uganda!
