Coffee and alcohol can be considered by most people as two perfectly distinct and different delights, but a cocktail manages to marry them.

Although most of us combine coffee with morning awakening or an afternoon break and alcohol with a dinner or going to a bar, there are times that these two go well together. Leaving behind the simplicity of the espresso corretto, we try more complex and luxurious choices, like the famous Espresso Martini cocktail!

The story of Espresso Martini is not particularly old, since this cocktail dates back to the late 1980s. Although there are many who claim the discovering this cocktail, the most likely version says it was created by British barman Dick Bradsell, who is the creator of many other cocktails that are now considered as classic.

According to Bradsell, the main reason that led to the creation of Espresso Martini was the fact that in the bar he was working back then, there was an espresso machine was very close to him, so the popular bartender was preparing the drinks always having the smell of coffee in his nostrils. So when a beautiful young lady asked him for a cocktail that would "wake her up, then f**k her up" Bradsell did not hesitate at all: he stirred an espresso shot with vodka (the most popular drink of the time), and after experimenting a little bit, he served for the first time the cocktail that would soon become known as Espresso Martini!

Easily prepared at home, Espresso Martini does not require any special bartender equipment, except for a shaker. It is ideal for the beginning of an evening, as it combines alcohol with the stimulation given by the espresso. With only two alcoholic drinks and espresso you can prepare a delicious cocktail, that will impress everyone who will try it, with it complex aromas and taste.

  • Shake well for 20-25 seconds
  • Strain the drink in an iced martini glass
  • Garnish with three coffee beans

Tips for a perfect Espresso Martini

  • When adding the ingredients, make sure to add the hot espresso last, otherwise there is a chance that the melting ice cubes will dilute your drink.
  • Coffee should be fresh, both in terms of grinding and preparation.
  • Many suggest to use ristretto instead of espresso, as it is believed that the taste of coffee is more intense in this extraction level - you can experiment to get the result that satisfies you.
  • Several recipes suggest that the martini espresso is made with gin, instead of vodka. The original version of the cocktail was created with vodka, which, due to its more neutral flavor, highlights the aromas of coffee.
  • For the ideal balance of taste, we need a coffee with a rich aromatic pallet, moderate acidity and body, ideally 100% arabica.
  • If you do not have Kalhua, you can replace it with any other coffee-flavored liqueur with a slightly different result. Tia Maria is an ideal choice, while Baileys will give a sweeter drink.
  • Espresso Martini must always be prepared "Shaken, not stirred" like James Bond's Martini: if not hit in a shaker, the cocktail will not have its characteristic foam, which gives it a distinct character.
  • If you do not have an espresso machine, you can prepare the coffee you will use in a moka pot (or you can take a look for affordable home espresso machines)
  • Many combine Espresso Martini with different flavors, preparing lots of variations. Some popular additions to the classic recipe include chocolate, tequila, red pepper and lemon peel.
  • Enjoy responsibly! Espresso Martini may contain almost an entire espresso, but you shiuld not forget that it remains a cocktail, which is made up of strong alcoholic beverages. Consume it responsibly and remember not to drive if you have enough espresso martinis.
