It is a fact that in Greece we particularly love the cold, refreshing coffees. But is there cold coffee that keeps its flavors and aromas intact?

Although filter coffee, if properly prepared, releases all the aromas and organoleptic characteristics of the coffee beans, its frozen version is not an easy task - nor is it very common in our country. On the one hand, filter coffee prepared in a conventional coffee maker is often flat and irreproachable, and things get worse if ice cubes are added, while on the other hand Cold Brew can be particularly tasty and complex, but its preparation it is particularly time consuming and its delicious profile is different, since there are no features such as acidity.

However, other coffee cultures, such as Japanese, as well as in various European countries, seem to be particularly fond of the icy filter coffee. Quite different from Freddo Espresso and having nothing to do with greek frape, frozen filter coffee is a way to enjoy a  refreshing coffee drink that keeps all the elements of the delicious coffee profile we chose at the same time. The best way to enjoy an icy coffee filter is to prepare it in a Pour Over glass coffee maker.

How does a Pour Over Coffee Maker makes filter coffee more delicious?

The Pour Over glass is designed in such a way that the extraction highlights the natural characteristics of the coffee, resulting in a highly aromatic coffee filter, very tasty and deep. The properties that make the coffee maker stand out are also maintained in the production of cold coffee - the frozen coffee filter never tasted better.

The extraction follows the basic principles of the Pour Over method, with the difference that the coffee / water ratio is slightly higher in order for coffee to maintain its intense body while ice maker is placed in the coffee maker while reducing the water so that coffee freeze immediately, without dilution. The extraction keeps almost as much as the extraction of the hot coffee and the result is the same delicious and aromatic, while the instant freezing of the coffee helps to maintain its taste and aroma, as well as its body.

How is Iced Coffee prepared in a glass Pour Over Coffee Maker? (proportions are calculated for 400 ml capacity)

  • Put in your coffee maker 150 gr  ice cubes
  • Heat 250ml of water at a temperature of 92-26 degrees Celsius
  • Grind 40 to 45 gr of coffee, a little thicker than for a conventional filter machine
  • Place the ground coffee on the metal filter, and wet well with some of the hot water (pre-extraction)
  • Then add the remaining water with gentle circular movements
  • In a few minutes, your coffee maker will be filled with an aromatic, cold filter coffee . Ice cubes that have not yet melted keep the coffee cool.

Is it possible to experiment while preparing cold coffee with a Pour Over Coffee Maker?

The Pour Over coffee maker, due to its nature and its absolutely manual handling, offers all sorts of experimentation, since even a slight change in the extraction variables affects the flavor. The same goes for cold coffee!

Apart from adjusting the coffee / water ratio in such a way that coffee is as strong or light as we want, it is a good idea to use ice cubes made of coffee if ready, so that the taste will not be altered at all. In this case, it is good to reduce the amount of ground coffee we use, otherwise the result will be too much. In our drink, we can add concentrated or sweetened milk, making a coffee beverage that is particularly popular in both Japan and Southeast Asian countries.

This spring (and of course, the next summer), a new iced coffee will be added next to our favorite Freddo Espresso: try a cold, refreshing filter coffee from a Pour Over glass coffee maker and enjoy the maximum flavor and the strongest aroma in its cold version!
