Frequently Asked Questions about  Pour Over Coffee makers finally answered!

Which Coffee is suitable for a Pour Over coffee maker?

Any coffee, regardless of its variety or roasting, can be extracted into a Pour Over coffee maker provided it has the proper grind. To extract properly, our coffee should be ground a little bit more coarse than we would grind it for a conventional filter coffee maker, having a texture reminiscent of thick sea salt.

Extraction in a Pour Over coffee maker emphasizes the organoleptic characteristics and uniquely highlights the aromas of coffee. Although each coffee can be successfully extracted in such a coffee maker, for optimal results, it is best to choose an aromatic, 100% Arabica blend with a complex aromatic profile and ideally medium roasted. Still, Pour Over Extraction is the ideal way to enjoy a single origin coffee, enjoying the special flavors that each area has to offer in its full range.

If you want to start experimenting with a Pour Over coffee maker, we can choose a 100% Arabica blend such as Lavazza Tierra or Sant Eustachio or a single origin coffee such as Cosmai Altura or Cosmai Buena.

How much coffee should be used?

Begin by having a basic rule: 10-13 gr ground coffee / 150 ml of water, for a mug of intense flavor, but not too strong. From then on, everything is a matter of personal taste and experimentation. If you want the cup lighter, reduce the amount of coffee a little, but if you want it stronger, we can increase it. If you have a coffee with strong, intense flavors (eg a single origin coffee from Africa) you can choose to use less coffee, but if the blend is more neutral, maybe it's better to increase it a little.

Extra Tip: It is advisable to avoid advice on the internet and counting the water with "cups": they usually refer to the American metric system, which differs from the corresponding European (and Greek). Keeping the gr / ml ratio and "playing" with it, you will always have great results.

What's the right water temperature?

Ideally, the water we will use for extracting in a Pour Over coffee machine should be between 90 and 93 degrees Celsius. If we want to be absolutely accurate, we can use a cooking thermometer, but for everyday use, things can be done much simpler: putting in our kettle about 500ml of water and bringing them to boiling point. After about 5-7 minutes, the water temperature will have reached the desired level.

Pour Over fans say that every coffee and every little difference in grinding also needs the corresponding temperature differentiation, however, if someone is a beginner, they can produce extraordinary coffee mugs with the simple empirical method.

What kind of filter should I use in my pour over coffee maker?

In Pour Over coffee makers you can use either metal, paper or cloth filter. Paper filters increase the cost of our consumables and our environmental footprint as they are disposable and retain the natural coffee oils, offering "pure" taste and low acidity, while cloth filter can survive more uses, and leave some of oils to pass into our cup. On the other hand, a stainless steel filter has an unlimited lifetime and results in a very rich flavor as it does not retain the natural coffee oils at all. It is also the most economical solution, as it minimizes the need for consumables.

Is it possible to prepare Iced Coffee with a Pour Over coffee maker?

Pour Over coffee makers are designed to extract hot coffee, but are also easy to use to prepare iced coffee. First of all, as the coffee extracted from the Pour Over coffee maker is highly aromatic and has a strong flavor, it can cool and preserve its aromas in its cold version. There is, however, also a smart way to prepare an ice-cold coffee filter directly with a Pour Over coffee maker, following the steps below.

Still, we can use the Pour Over glass to prepare Cold Brew: in this case, place the coffee and water in the glass utensil, and leave the membrane covered coffee maker in the refrigerator for 12-24 hours. Using the metal filter, you weill filter your Cold Brew to get clear coffee, free of particles.

The Pour Over coffee maker came in to change the way we enjoy our coffee - it's easy, stylish, gives us complete control over extraction but, above all, gives us very delicious coffee - the coffee we deserve!
