Constuct your own custom made knock box!

Όποιος αγαπά τις κατασκευές και τον espresso, βρήκε τι θα κάνει το επόμενο Σαββατοκύριακο!

The knock box, although a necessary accessory for any professional or amateur barista, is generally one of the last pieces to add to your collection of barista tools. The Knock box serves for easy emptying the portafilter from the remnants of ground coffee, after each use. For professional baristi, who need to prepare lots of espresso shots very quickly, it is as we absolutely understand necessary, but it is still a useful supplement to the "arsenal" of amateurs as well.

The Knock Box necessarily consists of a hard surface, on which we strike the portafilter, and a container for collecting coffee residues. Depending on our needs, the shock absorber is designed to offer maximum ergonomics: a professional knock box has a large coffee collection container, while the home ones are clearly smaller. Usually, it is made of stainless steel, while it can be lined with plastic or other material, while wooden knock boxes, which are extremely elegant, are not uncommon. Color is purely a matter of choice for the barista!

If someone is passionate about DIT, he can relatively easily build his own custom made punch. Building a knock box requires equipment, knowledge and ease of construction, otherwise it is a process that can become even more dangerous for someone without inexperience. However, the staff, custom made percussion compensates for any inconvenience!

What will you need for a custom made knock box ?

  • A wooden storage container (for kitchen utensils)
  • A 1.5 cm thick metal pipe
  • Rubber Ribbons
  • Pipe caps

How is a custom made knock box made?

  • Measure (based on our available space and our machine), to cut the container to the appropriate size, with a small saw
  • With a drill, drill two holes in the sides of the container to pass our pipe.
  • With the saw, cut the "mouth" of the knock box. It is best to draw it on paper first and transfer it with a pencil to the wood, to avoid the possibility of error.
  • With sandpaper and file, smooth both the "mouth" and the holes for the pipe.
  • Put the rubber bands in the holes.
  • Pass the pipe and close its ends with the lids. It should protrude slightly (and evenly) on both sides.
  • Your knock box is ready!

CAUTION: As simple as it may seem, the knock box construction process is a demanding process, with tools that in careless or inexperienced hands can cause damage or serious injury. It is recommended to use protective equipment, such as gloves, mask and glasses, while such constructions should not be done by minors or by those who do not have experience in handling dangerous tools such as drills and saws.

All this certainly sounds - and is - a little difficult, especially when there are so many quality Knock Boxes, in a variety of sizes, colors and features, and even at such good prices! However, the joy of creation, the intensity of the craft and the patience required for the perfect, personal, tailor made result, may appeal to a few, but it is one of the most beautiful hobbies out there!
